MAET Program Technology Showcase
*Michigan State University's Master of Arts in Educational Technology (MAET) Program Goal*
"To prepare teachers, administrators, and other educational professionals for the thoughtful use of technologies to support teaching and learning in a range of educational environments."
"To prepare teachers, administrators, and other educational professionals for the thoughtful use of technologies to support teaching and learning in a range of educational environments."
This whole page highlights some of my favorite and most impactful projects from my MAET program. As a school librarian/media specialist I do not actually have a classroom full of students so I have always tried to create technologically based projects that are very literacy-centered. The following showcase reflects that outlook.

Michigan's Underground Railroad WebQuest. I created this online WebQuest for a third grade class using Weebly. While designing the site I worked very hard to create a literacy based activity that really pushed third grade students to put themselves in the role of an escaped slave on their way to Michigan and freedom on the Underground Railroad. The third grade teachers at Lake City Area Schools still use this WebQuest as part of their Social Studies Underground Railroad curriculum. The children's books I used to support this online activity are listed below:

PowerPoint as an Instructional ToolI created my first STAIR project using PowerPoint as an instructional tool for a third grade class. STAIR stands for Stand Alone Instructional Resource. My STAIR presentation focused on the States of Matter and literacy skills by having groups of students read through several slides that presented information about solids, liquids, and gases and then quizzed them on the content. This project involved no direct instruction from any teacher and was completely self directed. The third grade teachers at Lake City Area Schools are currently using this STAIR project as a review activity for their States of Matter grade level curriculum. **Click here to view a Google Presentation version of my STAIR States of Matter PowerPoint Presentation.** |
My First Podcast using AudacityMy school district focuses a lot on literacy skills and we have found the Accelerated Reader program to be an excellent tool for incentivizing kids to read. Accelerated Reader assesses students' reading levels and allows them to find books that fall within that reading level to build reading skills. Awards and prizes are earned as students increase their reading levels and earn points by passing comprehension tests on the books they have read. I used this program as the basis for my first ever podcast which I recorded and edited using Audacity. I compared two very different students to help portray the diversity in attitudes found in Lake City Area Schools' students with regard to the Accelerated Reader program that is currently in place. My First LMS Online Course using HaikuI created my first online course using the Learning Management System Haiku. I used Haiku to create a self contained online Internet Safety course that required students to use their literacy skills to read through the course content, supported visual learners by asking students to watch web-based videos, and increased technology competency by having students complete course assignments all within the confines of the LMS. This course is being beta-tested by the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade students at Lake City Area Schools this 2013-2014 school year as an option for fulfilling the Michigan Department of Education Technology Standards for Grades 3-5 within our district curriculum. Google Docs as a Technology Tool to Create a Sustainable Library Program
Year to year I struggle to maintain the book-buying budget for my school libraries. With this project I used Google Docs to create a Sustainable Funding Plan for the Lake City School Libraries. Google Forms came in very handy as I created Teacher, Student, and Parent Surveys as information gathering systems for my funding plan. I have been working for the past three years to convince the staff of Lake City Schools of the many benefits of using Google Docs as a professional tool throughout our district. The link below and the following Stakeholder Surveys are evidence of my project work and are a part of an upcoming professional development presentation for my school district in a continued effort to show teachers the benefits of using Google Docs.
